FAQ

Rock Tamers

1. My exhaust is too close to the rubber flap ,what should I do?

Adequate clearance must be maintained to prevent heat damage to the flap. If at least 250mm cannot be achieved we suggest a minor tail pipe modification to dump the exhaust gasses down or to the side of the vehicle.

For vehicles with exhausts that cannot be diverted we suggest attaching a light weight metal or aluminium heat shield to the mud flap clamp bolts in the vicinity of the exhaust. This will deflect the heat while allowing the flap to move freely.

Common sense should prevail, if you feel your flaps are getting too hot because of the exhaust then have the modification done.

2. What Warranty do you offer?

ROCK TAMERS AUSTRALIA warrants this product to be free of defects in material and workmanship under normal use and service for the period of 12 months from the original consumer date of purchase (proof of purchase is required).

Normal use does not include EXTREME OFF ROAD driving. eg. Rock crawling etc.

ROCK TAMERS AUSTRALIA will not warrant damage to mud flaps caused by installing the Rock Tamers too close to the exhaust pipe on the tow vehicle.

3. Can I fit Rock Tamers to my vehicle with rear wheel carriers?

Yes, Rock Tamers can be fitted to most vehicles with rear wheel carriers with the exception of the 200 Series Toyota Landcruiser with ARB rear wheel carrier. The support arms of the Rock Tamers can rotate 360 degrees allowing them to be set up at any angle.Caution must be taken not to create a gap between the top support rods and the rear bumper.

To prevent this from happening the off cut of the rubber flaps can be attached to the lower inside of the bumper elimination the gap.

Unfortunately due to the design of the ARB 200 Series rear wheel carrier it does not allow any attachments to the hitch shaft as the entire bumper opens up.

We are looking at producing mounting clamps which will be permanently attached to the rear bumper
and will accommodate the Rock Tamer rod and flap assembly. These will allow the Rock Tamer to open up with the rear wheel assembly. (These will be produced if the demand is there.)

4. I have seen the Rock Tamers set at different angles. What angle should I set my Rock Tamers?

The angle will vary from vehicle to vehicle depending on tires etc. When traveling, the flaps should be about 45 degrees away from the vehicle. This will help re-direct stones back down at a shallow angle.

Top help achieve this angle, the static angle can be set anywhere between 10 and 30 degrees.

We suggest start at the lower angle and experiment until you find an angle which is appropriate for your set up.

5. Why don’t you produce a Rock Tamer to go right across the rear of the vehicle?

There are a number of reasons why we don’t make a one piece flap.

Vehicles towing large caravans, boats, camper trailers etc. need to maintain a good airflow down through the centre of the vehicle to help prevent transmissions and differentials from over heating. If a full length flap is attached it will inhibit good air flow and may contribute to such over heating and void your warranty.

A full width flap will create more wind drag and affect your fuel consumption considerably.

On gravel roads full width flaps create a vortex in the centre whipping up abrasive sand and dust hence increasing the sand blasting affect on your tow vehicle.

6. How effective are the Rock Tamers?

Rock Tamers will cut your damage down to 70-80%.

Rock Tamers will not protect everything from harm. Results may vary depending on road surface and conditions, vehicle types, tyre profile, weather conditions, installation and driving input (particularly speed).

Please apply some common sense to your expectations relating to the products performance.

How can I tell genuine from a grey import?

A genuine Rocktamer has a badge on the hub of the unit reading rocktamers.com.au.  If this badge is not present and you do not have Australian fitting instructions in your instruction booklet you have purchased a grey import.  The grey imports might be cheaper but please be aware they are not covered by our warranty, we can not service them with spare parts and if you have any issues with these grey imports you need to go back to the place of purchase.  All our Rocktamer dealers have the genuine Rocktamers and will be able to offer you full service, fitting and are able to organise spare parts if needed.

Mesh Insert

What is a mesh insert?

We have available a mesh insert to fit the Rock Tamer for people who travel on gravel roads etc.

This mesh insert is attached to the existing flaps and is a light weight rip-stop mesh material designed to stop the stray stones between the flaps yet still allows a good airflow.

The mesh is available in two sizes.  750mm wide.  This is designed to fit the most popular 4wd vehicles.

900mm wide.  This is designed for larger motor homes flat towing cars.

Secure-A-Hitch

1. My hitch is at a 45 degree angle. Can I still fit a Secure-A-Hitch wedge insert?

Yes, you can. In the kit we have included a 45 degree stainless steel spacer. This spacer will be placed on the appropriate bolt prior to inserting in the hitch.
Some hitches have varying angles, some less than 45 degrees. Some over. This spacer can be ground down to the appropriate angle.

2. Will the Pin Replacement Kit fit all vehicles?

The Pin Replacement Kit will fit most vehicles providing you have reasonable access to at least one hole on the side of the receiver. The 200 Series Toyota Landcruiser is the most difficult to fit due to it’s recessed receiver.

3. Where can I view the new Secure-A-Hitch anti rattle device?

Rock Tamers Australia will have the new Secure-A-Hitch anti rattle device on display at all the major caravan and camping shows. See Where can I view the Rock Tamers question for a full list of shows throughout the year.

Rock Tamers Australia will have a full stock of Pin Replacement Kits for solid tow bars on display at all the major caravan and camping shows. See Where can I view the Rock Tamers question for a full list of shows throughout the year.

Clear View Mirrors

1. Can I have the Clearview mirrors fitted to my vehicle or do I do it my self?

The mirrors comes with a very detailed instructional DVD. On this DVD it shows you how to remove  the door lining of your vehicle without any damage and how to remove the existing mirrors and fit the new mirrors.

This is a very simple process providing you follow the instructions on fitting the first mirror. Generally you can fit the second mirror without reference to the DVD.

Allow approximate 15 – 20 minutes per door.

We can fit the mirrors but will be subject to prior arrangements.
